My name is Boysie Gordon, and welcome to Boysie Talks Business.
When I started my first business, I was LOST.
Everyone around me swore I was this genius…
“Dude, that’s crazy!”
“Boysie, I’m so proud of you!”
“Man, I can’t believe you actually did it…”
I’d always smirk before I opened my mouth to say thanks.
I’m sure they thought it was me being pretentious or egotistical…
A common default assumption people often make routed in insecurity.
But in reality, my smirk represented the outburst of laughter I was holding back.
In truth, I had absolutely no clue how I was doing what I was doing…
And my first true test of entrepreneurship didn’t come until I hit my first $1M.
The First Test
We were short on manpower…
Orders were failing left and right!
Customers were banging on our door, looking for answers.
It was at that moment that I missed being an employee,
But there was no manager to save me this time…
I had to fix this myself.
I started calling out commands like a sea captain.
“Focus on this”
“I’m gonna work on that”
“We can do this, we just need to get here.”
For the first time, I understood what a CEO’s actual job was.
A CEO is the captain, and they are responsible for the direction of the company.
I was nobody’s friend…
We had gone from $400k MRR to $200k MRR within the last 30 days!
My only objective was to recover from the huge loss we had taken.
This would remain my focus for the next 4 months…
Land ho!!
I saw the destination at a distance, and I was ecstatic…
Numbers were trending up.
Customers we lost were coming back
Our order fulfillment and operations became top-notch
Within four months, we managed to scale our MRR back up to $350k!
But, But, But How?
The answer is pretty simple…
We did 3 things:
We analyzed
We hypothesized
We optimized
To explain further…
First, we looked at our entire system to figure out where the problems were…
Then, we made a few educated guesses about what we could do…
After that, we focused on ONLY the actions that had the largest impact!
It was a continuous experiment in which we sought after the best solutions…
Tip: Oftentimes, the best solution is the one you’ve been avoiding!
I believe anyone willing to take on the risk of entrepreneurship deserves success!
