First Edition: From Rock Bottom to Owning a $2,500,000 Company in Under 3 Years
This is the story of my journey and how this newsletter will benefit you. Narrated by Boysie.
Welcome to the first edition of Boysie Talks Business!
I am so excited to start this leg of my journey, but first, let’s get the awkwardness out of the way!
Introduction
Hi, I’m Boysie!
Some of you may know me as a friend, some as an ex-boss, some as a writer, but most as a stranger.
And to understand me now, I have to take you back to my first life-changing event.
Dropout Class of 2018
I had been attending college for 3 years at this point. Graduation was only 2.5 semesters away. After that, I’d have a BS in Psychology and…
I honestly didn’t know.
That was part of the problem, I had no clarity on my future. I was burnt out and sick of pretending to be happy. So, for that entire semester, I refused to go to class, and I played video games to my heart’s content… which, after adjusting for depression, meant I played video games all day, every day.
Wake-Up Call #1
My girlfriend (now fiancee) could no longer tolerate my video game binging at the time.
She was tired of working hard at school AND work only to come home to her lazy boyfriend, who did nothing all day. One day, as fed up as can be, she yelled, “Boysie, either go back to class or get a job!”
I’m paraphrasing.
It was more vulgar than that, but I heard the message loud and clear. And I couldn’t argue with her. “You’re right,” I sighed in response. Her face looked surprised, and her fists were clenched, expecting an argument.
I knew I wasn’t going back to class, so I immediately began applying for a job.
A Fast-Forward to Now
That moment changed the trajectory of my life, but not in the way you think.
It actually put me on a collision course with rock bottom. Soon after I started looking for a job, I found one. A business-to-consumer sales job where I’d start in a Walmart, pitching grandmas to upgrade their cable services.
So here’s the tea:
After crushing the job within my 1st month, I was offered an opportunity.
I officially left college and moved to Nevada to help the company expand.
Quickly, I became lazy and complacent, resulting in me making no money!
I was fired, and I bounced around, trying to recover, but it didn’t matter.
Wake-up call #2After going completely broke, I moved back home to Georgia.
I revamped my resume and started applying for jobs
I secured a sales opportunity paying 2x my past income + commission!
I worked night and day at 100% of my ability…
Got promoted to senior account manager within the year.
I quit four months later to start my first-ever company.
Hired a bunch of “friends” (big mistake)
Scaled it to $2.5 million ARR within the first fiscal year:
$0 to $67k in 1 month
$67k to 1.4M in 7 months
$1.4M to $2.5M in 4 months
I got stabbed in the back a few times by “friends”
Profit fell off a cliff while revenue stayed the same.
We fixed the problem, but I had no more fight left in me.
Wake-up Call #3I dissolved the company to start doing business consulting.
And here we are now!
Through the ups and downs, twists and turns, I learned what it takes to be successful. At this point, I have achieved professional success and entrepreneurial success, and I want to help others do the same.
That’s the whole point of this newsletter!
